Pope Francis and Civil Unions

At the moment everybody is jumping on their ideological bandwagons with the release of a documentary in which Pope Francis apparently mentions his preference for civil unions for same-sex people rather than marriages. This is nothing new in this if he did refer to civil unions, as it was filmed in 2019 and Pope Francis even before he was Pope supported the idea of same-sex unions rather than gay marriages in secular societies to protect the legal rights of people who were homosexual when he was an Archbishop in Argentina.

Those on the left who do not accept the Church's moral teaching in regard to sex outside marriage will twist the idea of the Pope into some kind of allowance for homosexual and other sexual acts outside marriage. Those on the right will see this as a further betrayal by Pope Francis of the teachings of the Church. However the Pope is not doing either of these things.

The Pope is concerned both for the soul and dignity of the individual and the good of marriage in the modern world and society. It is really only recently that we have come to understand as a Church and society that there is a such a thing as a predominately homosexual inclination and a predominately heterosexual inclination. In the past we thought in terms of having a sexual inclination and the choosing to do homosexual or heterosexual acts. When we have these changes in understanding based on science and other disciplines then there is often a need to change our pastoral, social and political policies and understandings. We must do this in a way that is consistent with the infallible content of the moral teachings of the Church and its Tradition.

However, we have come to realise that we as a Church cannot and should not force our teachings on others who are not believing Catholics. I am sure that today most Catholics would not want the civil State to criminalise acts of masturbation, adultery and fornication even though we consider such acts to be wrong and immoral. In the past both Jews and Christians considered male masturbation as a terrible crime when the science or beliefs of their day believed that the male sperm was the embryo. Thus the Church's understanding of this changed with further information but in a way that was consistent with the Church's understanding of the moral law.

So-called homosexual or gay marriages are wrong and every devout Catholic should be praying for our countries who have introduced them as equal to (heterosexual) marriages to repeal them. However it is obviously better for society and the individual and that a person who is living a homosexual lifestyle restricts themselves to one person who they are committed to than to be promiscuous and having sex with numerous people. This is the principle of the lesser of the two evils. Thus same-sex unions can be a step towards a more moral lifestyle. Also same-sex unions don't have to include sexual acts but could unite two people of the same sex in a covenant of friendship and family. However, it has now been revealed in this documentary that the Pope in Spanish does not use the words "civil unions" but refers to "a law of  civil co-existence" (una ley de convivencia civil) in regard to protecting the human rights of people who are or consider themselves to be homosexual in orientation in the context of the family. He states that they have a right to be legally covered. Whether one translates convivencia as co-existence or co-habitation it is not referring to homosexual civil unions (uniones civiles).

While theologians and others can discuss and debate these issues, in the end it will be the Holy Spirit that will guide us through the discernment of the Pope and the Bishops who are in union with him. In no way at this stage does any Catholic have to support the idea of same-sex unions based on a supposed opinion expressed by the Pope in an interview and they are free to disagree until or if it is proposed as a teaching of the magisterium. One thing we do know is that in area of doctrines on faith and morals the Church led by the Pope cannot teach heresy or error in his magisterial teaching. So my advice is to let the theologians and schools of thought contend and then joyful accept what ever the Pope discerns and officially teaches from the Chair of Peter.
