For many years now researchers believed that M222 y-dna was the dna signature of the ancient O'Neill Kings of Ireland. Gradually doubts began to be expressed about this identification and the descendants of the later O'Neill Kings were found to belong to DF27. For a long time I continued to hold to the M222 identification and while there are certainly O'Neills who belong to M222, I now hold that Niall belonged to R1b L21 DF13 ZZ10 Z253 y-dna. Ir was one of the Milesian princes that invaded Ireland in the 3rd century BC, with his brothers Heber and Heremon.
