Job Cork, an old Shepherd who died in 1807 and worked in the area of Uffington Castle told Tom Hughes, the author of "The Scouring of the White Horse", a few verses about Dragon Hill.
Ah, Zur, I can remember well
The stories the old volk do tell –
Upon this hill which here is seen
Many a battle there have been.
If it is true as I heard say
King Gaarge did here the dragon slay
And down below on yonder hill
They buried him, as I heard tell…
Dragon Hill which was also known as Pendragon Hill is believed to have been the burial place of St George and the so-called white horse is believed by many not to be a horse but a dragon. Others favouring the horse origin, link it with Epona the Goddess of Horses and Rhiannon the Welsh version of Epona.
The Catholic writer G.K Chesterton wrote his famous "The Ballad of the White Horse" based on the legends of this place and the setting for one of the great battles of King Alfred the Great called Ethandune. This Battle is also called the battle of Edington bt it probably was called the battle of Ulfiadun or Ulfiadune after its location at the Castle known by that name.
